Mindfulness as Effective as Meds for Anxiety

In a study published in JAMA Psychiatry, researchers found mindfulness meditation to be as clinically effective in reducing symptoms of anxiety as medication. One significant difference between the two modalities for treating anxiety is medication often has unpleasant side effects. This important information comes on the heels of the national recommendation to implement routine screenings for anxiety in adults. Anxiety disorders including social anxiety, generalized anxiety, and panic attacks impact the lives of more than 25% of men and 40% of women. Clearly, the negative side effects of medication are a motivation to include a holistic approach to dealing with anxiety through a mindfulness meditation practice.
